Kazakhstan joins the Global Carbon Pricing Challenge as a new Partner

< Back to News

Kazakhstan is the latest country to join as a Partner to the Global Carbon Pricing Challenge (GCPC), a global initiative aiming to cover 60% of the world’s emissions with carbon pricing by 2030. Kazakhstan joins existing Partners Canada, Chile, Denmark, the EU, France, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, Republic of Korea, Sweden and the UK, and Friend Cote d’Ivoire.

The GCPC is a leader-level initiative, announced by Canada during COP26, that aligns economic objectives with low-carbon objectives, and drives clean investment in clean innovation and technology. Through the GCPC, Partner and Friend jurisdictions are provided a platform for global collaboration and sharing of lessons learned from implementing carbon pricing.

Mr. Yerlan Nyssanbayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources in Kazakhstan, said:

“Kazakhstan's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting environmentally friendly technologies through its Emissions Trading System (ETS) is a testament to our proactive approach towards combating climate change globally. By joining the Global Carbon Pricing Challenge, we aim to strengthen our national ETS, aligning with our decarbonization objectives and advancing sustainable development for future generations.”

Chair of the GCPC Advisory Committee and Canada’s Ambassador for Climate Change, Catherine Stewart, said:

“We’re delighted to welcome Kazakhstan as the latest Partner to the Global Carbon Pricing Challenge. Carbon pricing is most effective when more countries adopt it, as broader coverage means more opportunities to find clean solutions. As momentum grows, we’re pleased to welcome new Partners to the initiative as we work towards our goal of 60% global GHG emissions covered by carbon pricing by 2030.”

With a growing number of Partners and Friends on board, the GCPC stands united on the frontline of global climate action, driving progress towards a sustainable and low-carbon future for all.
